Not light, but it is comfortable if the shape suits you

What you see here is a new-for-2014 version of San Marco's Regale Racing Team saddle. Despite its price and the fact that it's promoted as a racing saddle, at 241g it's not that light and is 13g heavier than claimed.

San Marco uses Xsilite Stealth for its rails, which combines titanium, carbon fibre and silicone. It says this is strong and light, but makes no claims on its vibration-damping qualities. The rails are certainly stiff, but the long, textured clamping area provides security.

The shell looks like standard plastic, but San Marco has engineered carbon fibre strands into it for extra strength. This means the BioFoam padding provides most of the comfort. It is firm, but we didn't find the saddle unduly harsh on longer rides. With the shape not holding you in position, the Regale relies on the cover to do this. It works too – we stayed in situ even in shiny lycra.

The Regale is an evolution of a shape that's been around for years: flat and wide. From tip to tail there's virtually no undulation, while across it's quite rounded. It's fairly broad where your genitals lie, though, so if you're sensitive to numbness, look elsewhere, but the wide, rounded rear supports your sit bones well.
