Dropping your seat a few inches makes a huge difference to how you descend – you can get your centre of gravity lower and the seat is far less likely to kick you up the arse. The only problem is the hassle of having to stop and change the saddle height. Oh, and the readjusting at the bottom of the hill.
Maverick believe in making common sense products for people who ride, and this is one of them. Don’t confuse the Speedball with a suspension seatpost – it doesn’t need to have air pressure altered in any way – just fit the post, bolt your seat on and, if necessary, adjust the position of the lever to stop it fouling the seat rails.
The 3in of unlimited adjustment is more than enough to turn a sketchy downhill into a controlled, speedy descent, and the easy lever action means it’s, er, easy to use. While sitting on the seat, you pull the lever towards the seat and use your weight to compress the post. Let go of the lever and the saddle stays down. Pull the lever again with no weight on the seat and it returns to full height. Brilliant.
If pressure is lost, or the bike is put upside down, the post suffers from a spongy effect, but all you need to do is pull the lever and pump the post a few times and it returns to normal. It’s a fantastic product for riders who want to descend as fast as they climb.
