A multi-tool classic that remains a popular choice for our pack

CrankBrothers always produce covetable multi-tools that are a joy to look at, and the M17 is a lovely piece of design with its rounded edges and knurled sections.

The tools are firm with little flex and the narrow body gets into most awkward corners. For some reason though, it seems to attract dirt at the base – and when grime gets between the tools it makes everything stiffen up, so the tool will need some regular TLC.

The chain tool, even though it is integral, is more successful than others of the same type. The single plate is deep and secure, and the small size isn’t a bother because the textured surface gives just enough grip, while the compact body isn’t too big to act as an effective handle.

A rubberised band stops the tool rattling around in your pack but it won’t stop the dirt getting in, so we’d consider upgrading to the 19 (which comes with a box) if you’re a mucky pup.
