Mavic’s updated Frosts are some of the best winter road boots we’ve used – so long as you can get the fit right and don’t mind the cost.
The Frost is based on Mavic’s mid-range Energy products. The nylon and glass fibre sole is stiff without being heavy or overly thick and at 852g (size 44 with cleats) the whole boot is pretty light.
Thin insulation under a Gore-Tex liner provides excellent splash and lower foot protection down to freezing temperatures without boiling you too badly on damp double-figure Celsius sessions.
The three Velcro straps also let you tune fit to some extent, although it’s generally stiff for the first few rides. The long neoprene cuff gives excellent ankle warmth and decent rain water protection too. Unfortunately, unless you’re careful with how you arrange it, there’s an obvious pressure point where it wraps over the fat tongue.
The price looks even more expensive when you realise it’s four times the price of a top-quality overshoe that will arguably provide better protection and fit when used over conventional shoes.
