Our review
Stylish, comfy shoes with good cleat placement, fit and feel, though a few things could be improved

Pros:

Sole balances flex and stiffness well; comfy all day; good cleat placement options

Cons:

Velcro strap isn’t massively effective; cleats can stand proud, making walking on hard surfaces awkward

These Vectal clipless shoes from newcomers Afton are really comfy underfoot, even after hours of pedalling. There’s just enough flex and feedback from the sole to ensure you can feel where the pedal is, without them feeling soggy or soft when you put the power down.

Thanks to 35mm cleat slots that sit quite far back towards the midfoot, I could position my cleats exactly where I wanted them.

When paired with Crankbrothers’ Mallet pedals, I found the minimally-treaded ‘Intact’ outsole to work well, never getting in the way when clipping in or out. It’s not the tackiest rubber though, which you’ll notice if you don’t manage to quite clip in on wetter rides.

With spacers fitted, the cleats sit proud of the sole, which isn't an issue on the bike, but it's not the comfiest when walking.

The laces are quite thick and I found them to be a little bit short, while the Velcro strap is anchored on both sides of the shoe (not at one end and then pulled through a loop), so even when cinched up tightly, it doesn’t boost security all that much.

I had no issues with heel slip while riding, although I did notice some when walking back up the hill.
