Convenient, effective closures for good, sub-£100 road shoes

Pros:

Fine fit, comfort and good performance

Cons:

BOA dial can be hard to tighten

Scott’s lowest-priced BOA-fastened road shoes combine slick looks with practical specification. The composite injection nylon and fibreglass sole has a three-hole cleat fitting, permitting generous fore-aft adjustment, and hard rubber bumpers moulded around the heel and toe for walking grip and protection.

The uppers use synthetic leather in Scott’s Wrap Fit design, with a single forefoot seam in front of the ball of the foot, which is supported by the Velcro fit strap.

The heel cup is PU coated, and there are three 3D Nylon Airmesh panels around the toe box, with perforations along both sides of the shoe and in the tongue.

Supplementing the ventilation is a single, mesh-covered vent at the front of the sole, aligned with perforations in the footbed.

The shoes are available in sizes 40–48, in ladies or reflective versions (£5 extra), and my size 45 pair weigh 640g, which is reasonable for the price.

Scott’s Sport Fit is a little more relaxed than its Performance or Race Fit shoes, and is generously spacious for wider feet, even with thicker socks on.

The single BOA L6 dial is a little harder to turn the tighter it gets, but it does secure the shoe effectively, with the reinforced, shaped tongue resisting pressure from the cord.

A stiff heel cup envelops the heel, providing a slip-free foundation for pedalling, and the slim ErgoLogic insole gives good arch support and has a central metatarsal button.

Full gas sprints show that the sole isn’t race-shoe stiff, but it’s hardly flexy, and is easily sufficient for daily riding. The uppers are supportive, with no pressure points or hot spots, and the various ventilation mechanisms keep cooling air passing through the shoe, improving comfort.

Visibility is enhanced by reflective surrounds to the Scott logos on the heel and toe box too, rounding off a well-featured shoe.
