Stiff, sturdy, roomy and custom-mouldable race shoe, but slightly heavy

Pedal and frame manufacturers Time only do one triathlon shoe, so they’ve made sure it’s a good one. The sole unit is seriously stiff and shallow for a direct-drive feel and the cleat area gets a ‘Vibraser’ layer of semi aramid (Kevlar) weave to absorb vibration. We had no ‘hot spots’ underfoot despite some long days on back roads and intensive sprint sessions.

The upper can also be ‘thermoformed’ for a custom fit with a hairdryer (not an oven). It’s not essential though, as they’re comfortable anyway, with generously roomy fit to avoid squashed toes. Tall heel loops and broad main straps ease entry, and there are toe vents and mesh to help drying.

Price is competitive for the features too. They’re secure enough, but the separate upper tongue and main strap move separately to the front of the shoe, which won’t agree with riders who like to be anchored in their shoe. At 624g (without cleats) they’re heavy too.
