Double-wrapped bars, a climbing switch and an additional brake lever for the cobbles

The 2017 Paris-Roubaix winner lined up as one of the favourites for the 2018 edition of the race, however Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing) was unable to match last year's stellar performance and settled for a respectable 4th place finish in Sunday's race.

For last year's race, Van Avermaet won the cobbled Monument aboard BMC's endurance focused Gran Fondo RBX, but for 2018 the Olympic champion raced aboard his custom finished BMC Teammachine SLR01, with a few added customisations to cope with the cobbles.

Alongside the commonplace double-wrapped handlebar tape and wider tyres to take some of the sting out of the cobbles, Van Avermaet also ran an additional brake lever on the handlebar tops in conjunction with the standard rear brake lever.

A popular hand position while racing over the Paris-Roubaix is the handlebar tops, and alongside the additional brake lever, Van Avermaet also ran a Shimano Di2 climbing switch close to the stem.

This combination of the additional brake lever and gear switch adds extra control for Van Avermaet while racing on the tops, offering a safer and more comfortable position.

The flat parcours of Paris-Roubaix often results in larger gearing than normal for riders. Van Avermaet ran his usual 53-tooth outer chainring and 11-28 cassette, but with a 44-tooth inner chainring for the Monument.

Shimano provided Van Avermaet with a full Shimano Dura-Ace R9150 groupset, including wheels and pedals, with last year's winner also running Shimano's new crank-based power meter.
