Really well equipped and versatile wheelset for your disc-clad frame

Mavic's SpeedCity wheels have been with us for a few years. Originally they were marketed as an alternative road wheelset for disc-equipped Mtbs (700c wheels fit into most Mtb frames with anything up to a 700x32 tyre).

However, with increasing numbers of road/urban/cyclo-cross frames and forks featuring disc mounts, the appeal for this type of wheelset is widening and Mavic face competition from the likes of Shimano as well as custom builders.

Mavic's wheel is nearly twice the price of Shimano's, but you save almost 400g of rotating weight, and the 24-spoke two-cross design is clean and classy, with gunmetal grey rims and hubs.

The straight-pull spokes eliminate the stress point at the spoke shoulder (where most fail), and they also allow you to change a rear driveside spoke without removing the cassette.

On the road they feel a bit lighter and faster than their 2kg all-in weight, and they're much quicker than Shimano'sT565s.They're nice and stiff, too, though with no rim brakes to rub it's less of an issue. Shod with 700x26 rubber they've handled everything from trips to the shops to 100-mile all-dayers with aplomb. They would certainly turn their hand to audax or fast touring with few issues, and they're still a great second set of wheels for your mountain bike, too.
