Q&A: Integrated Headache

I've read that integrated headsets, if not set up properly, can actually damage your frame, and that they're inherently susceptible to damage. Is this true?

Q: I'm looking for a new frame at the moment, and it seems that most of the high end ones have integrated headsets. I've read that these headsets, if not set up properly, can actually damage your frame, and that they're inherently susceptible to damage. Is this true?

A: While some carbon fibre frame makers bond aluminium inserts into the head-tubes to prevent the seating that the bearings fit into from enlarging, you can rest assured that problems should never arise on any bike using the fully integrated headset system if the bearings are checked and adjusted accordingly.
