Topeak HPX Combo review£64.99

Considering the other truly excellent products made by Topeak we're at a bit of a loss as to why this light set isn't as good as it could be. The front light offers a tight beam but really isn't bright enough to ride at any decent speed.

Considering the other truly excellent products made by Topeak we're at a bit of a loss as to why this light set isn't as good as it could be. The front light offers a tight beam but really isn't bright enough to ride at any decent speed, and the LED is so shrouded inside the light there isn't a great deal to boast about regarding visibility from the side and obtuse angles. It's powered by a single CR123A lithium battery and in constant mode this returned just under three hours of use. The problem is that a CR123A battery will cost on average £3, making it roughly £1 per hour to run this light, and you have the added problem of finding somewhere that sells CR123A batteries if you get stuck with a flat battery at night (we found a petrol station who stocked them and they were a staggering £4.99).

The rear light is a little better, with all-round good brightness from the disc-shaped layout of the six LEDs and a mounting system for posts, bags, racks and almost anywhere else you'd care to put the thing. But again, the battery choice is a little odd. It runs on two N cells, which aren't something that a corner shop tends to stock, but it did give amazingly long run times - above 50 hours. The mounts are good, and both mounting and battery changes are completely tool-free. Just remember to buy a spare CR123A and keep it in your bag for that power-hungry front light, or you'll need the WhiteLite HP PowerPack Li-Ion external battery pack for ultimate run times and cheaper running.
