Bikehut shackle lock and 180cm extender cable review£35.00

Halfords' own-brand security

BikeRadar score3/5

BikeHut is a Halfords own-brand, and this U-lock comes in a pack with a hooped 1.8m cable, which is quite a lot of kit for the money.

The lock is reminiscent of a Squire U-lock, and the keys and mechanism also look to be from the same manufacturer. If Halfords are rebranding other people’s locks, they could do a lot worse than choosing Squire.

In fact the BikeHut shackle passed our first test; crop resistance was excellent and we merely dented the surface 3-4mm. When twisting the lock to make it burst we were able to twist the shackle almost back upon itself but, on release, it sprang back to nigh on its original shape.

After the first test, the lock was inoperable – we couldn’t even get the key to sit in the barrel, but the lock was still locked. In the second test we cut and flexed open the shackle in 28 seconds – which doesn’t match the best on test but, at this price, is pretty good.
