BikeRadar verdict

4 out of 5 stars

"Comfortable performer suited to piling on the miles. A good price too"

This is Ritchey's mountain bike saddle, but it’s suited to road use too as it’s virtually identical to the Ritchey Streem, the road version. The difference is that the Marathon has more padding.

All of our testers found it to be comfortable and the comments led to this being labelled as an ideal saddle for long rides and touring.

The only drawback is that the saddle’s abrasion-resistant side panels allow it to soak up water when it rains. Thankfully that doesn’t get through to your bum though as the top cover is waterproof.

  • I have the black version from a couple of years ago. I really rate this saddle; I have done a double metric century with this saddle on a hrdarse cannondale aluminium framed bike...with no dramas.

It is nearly flat with a slightly flared rear. The padding is moderate, where the saddle really comes into its own is the shell flex: the shell in the perineal area flexes nicely over bumps, saving your soft bits from a hammering. The rear of the saddle (where the sit-bones sit) also flexes under load leading to a lovely suspended feel.

I bought this after my SLR left me with two saddle shaped bruises: it has a similar shape to the SLR but is indescribably more comfortable.

It is about 130-135 mm wide at the rear and is similar in dimensions to a SLR or the old flite.

As good as my old avocet 40R... the benchmark IMHO.

All this and 2/3 the price of selle italia....
