Kristy Scrymgeour has lived inside cycling for more than 20 years, at various turns as a professional racer (and multi-time Australian champion), journalist and current owner of one of the world's biggest women's pro teams, Specialized-Lululemon. And now, Scrymgeour has partnered with designer Brad Sheehan to create anew line of women's cycling clothing dubbed Velocio.

Made in Italy with fabrics hand-selected by Scrymgeour — everything had to be noticeably soft as well as technical — Velocio launched this year with 18 women's pieces plus a men's jersey and bib short. Prices range from US$169-$209 for most pieces.

"We started Velocio because we wanted there to be more beautiful apparel to wear on the bike," Scrymgeour said. "We all know that a big part of the motivation to ride is putting on great, beautiful clothing that fits really well. Particularly with my passion for helping to grow women's cycling, I thought that a really nice brand of clothing designed to fit really nicely and look great, as well as perform really well, was something we could contribute as a brand."

While there are a handful of women's cycling clothing companies, Velocio is uniquely positioned because of Scrymgeour's close ties to world-class riders. But Scrymgeour, a longtime women's cycling advocate, insists that she's not solely focused on elite riders — just anyone who loves to get out on a bike.

"We just love cycling and this is a really enjoyable and rewarding business to be involved in," Scrymgeour said. "My business partner, Brad Sheehan, has an amazing eye for design and an amazing capacity to get things done, so we've had a lot of fun putting together this line of apparel and we're excited about what the future will bring."
