Wahoo Fitness recently released the RPM Cadence Sensor that works on both Bluetooth 4.0 and ANT wireless frequencies so it can be paired with smartphones and cycling computers like the Garmin Edge family. While Wahoo has its own free smartphone app, Wahoo Fitness, the RPM works with other popular apps like Strava, MapMyRide and Cyclemeter.

The US$49.99 is available now in North America, but is not yet on sale in the UK or Australia.

Unlike other cadence sensors that must be zip-tied to the crank and require a magnet to be attached to the frame, the 7g RPM features a cleaner aethetic with double-sided 3M tape: it affixes to the back of the crank arm and no frame magnet is required. (You can attach the RPM with zip ties if you prefer.)

Two LEDs indicate activity: blue means Bluetooth connectivity and red means cadence has been detected.

The RPM works with iPhones (4s and newer) Androids (OS 4.3 and newer) and any cycling computer that uses ANT+.

"We’ve seen an incredible emergence of devices that connect to Smartphones,” Wahoo CEO Chip Hawkins said in a press release. “Adding ANT+ connectivity to our proven RPM Cadence Sensor only serves to make it more flexible and useful for a wider range of cyclists.”

BikeRadar has reviewed a range of Wahoo products, from the 5-star KICKR power trainer to the 3-star RLFKT computer.
