British Cycling's policy director Martin Gibbs, an influential figure in the federation's increasingly vocal road safety campaigning, is leaving to become chief of staff to Brian Cookson, the new UCI President.

His departure is effective immediately. Kirsty McCaskill-Baxter, BC's corporate communications manager, said it was too early to say whether immediate steps would be taken to fill the post of policy and legal affairs director.

Gibbs directed Cookson's hard fought UCI presidency campaign and has previous experience of the UCI's operations at its headquarters in Aigle, Switzerland. Prior to that, he spent a decade working in corporate finance in the city.

Gibbs recently prioritised lorry danger as one of British Cycling's key campaigning issues.

It also emerged today that long-standing UCI lawyer Philippe Verbeist had left the international federation.
