Premium outdoor equipment brand Arc'teryx is making its first foray into the world of mountain biking with a new kit range that spans a jacket, trousers and shorts.
The Canadian brand is associated with using the finest materials and fastidious design practices for its outdoor kit. As a hiking and camping nerd, I was excited to discover Arc'teryx has released its first MTB products.
Such an iconic name entering into the mountain biking space shows the cachet the sport has gained. With global sports giant Adidas now partnering with the Norco downhill team, there are some major brands showing they're keen to associate with the MTB scene.
Arc'teryx says the new range is being produced in a very limited run and is expected to sell out quickly.
Arc'teryx Rhoam Hybrid waterproof jacket

Available in men's and women's specific models, the Rhoam jacket, pants and shorts are tailored for “articulation and comfort whilst MTB riding”.
The Rhoam waterproofs are designed to be “articulated for comfort and unrestricted freedom to pedal, and made with breathable, weather-ready fabrics for spring rides”, but the price is astronomical.
Arc'teryx describes the Rhoam jacket as a “rugged mountain biking hardshell”, which is promised to be both waterproof and breathable. It says it includes “mountain bike-specific body mapping”, using a combination of stretch softshell material for breathability in key areas and waterproof Gore-Tex everywhere else.

The jacket's StormHood has it’s own drawstring and fits comfortably over a helmet without flopping about.
There are seam-sealed zips on the pockets, which appear on both sides at the rear, and a left outer breast pocket.

Arc'teryx Rhoam Hybrid pants and shorts

Arc'teryx describes the Rhoam pants and shorts as ‘hybrids’, meaning they are a breathable, water-repellent softshells, rather than using fully waterproof Gore-Tex as the jacket does. This should make them suitable for spring mountain biking.
The Rhoam pants and shorts feature a fitted design and riding-specific cut, so crouching, pedalling and cornering feel “natural” even with knee pads. Breathable Aequora AirPerm fabric panels on the waistband and behind the knees are designed to shed excess heat.

In other areas, the Fortius DWR (Durable Water Repellent) 2.0 softshell fabric is Bluesign-approved, which means it’s made from a percentage of recycled material. Arc'teryx says it chose it because of its durability and stretchiness.
The water-repellent finish provides a mix of breathability and weather-resistance to cope with spring showers. It is free from intentionally added PFAS (poly-fluoroalkyl ‘forever chemicals’).

The Rhoam pants have a tailored fit, which is form-fitting on the lower leg. This is combined with a zip on each calf to help get them off, which should be especially useful after a wet and muddy ride.
If you like pockets, you’ll be pleased to have four provided: two thigh pockets with zips for valuables such as car keys, and two open hand pockets.
