While Cervélo’s new R5 stole the show at the Tour de France Grand Départ, we’ve now had the chance to inspect Jonas Vingegaard’s latest aero bike – an unreleased update to the Cervélo S5.

First spotted on social media in May, this new S5 sticks closely to the silhouette of the existing model.

However, a closer inspection shows several subtle but significant changes.

A fully integrated cockpit

The most notable change is the move to a fully integrated one-piece cockpit, replacing the current Cervélo S5’s distinctive two-piece V-stem and bar.

Our measurements show Vingegaard will run a narrow 36cm (centre-to-centre at the hoods) bar, paired with a 120mm stem.

This new bar-stem unit features a slimmer central section, which may offer aerodynamic and weight-saving benefits.

The head tube and compensation tube, where the seat and top tubes meet, have been deepened subtly.

We also think the fork might be slightly deeper and the seatpost very slightly narrower.

1x drivetrain and deep wheels

Vingegaard is running a size-51cm frame with a 1x SRAM Red AXS groupset built around a 52T chainring and a 10-36t cassette. A cool teardrop-shaped Wolf Tooth aero chain guide helps keep his waxed chain securely in place.

The bike is equipped with 160mm cranks – that’s not quite as short as the 150mm cranks Vingegaard was seen testing last year, but it’s still at the shorter end of the sizing spectrum.

The Visma–Lease a Bike rider’s S5 was fitted with new, deeper Reserve wheels. These aren’t the carbon-spoked wheels we spotted earlier in the week, but a new 57mm front, 64mm rear combo. That’s a small jump in depth from the 52mm front, 63mm rear setup Vingegaard ran last year.

These were fitted with 29c Vittoria Corsa Pro TLR 'Wide Rim Optimised' tyres.

As built, the bike tipped our scales at 7.385kg – complete with two (empty) water bottles and a Garmin Edge 840 bike computer.

That’s a respectable figure for a proper aero bike and suggests Cervélo has trimmed some fat from the frame or cockpit (or perhaps both).
