The British Cycling Foundation has partnered with the Parkinson’s UK charity to fund a pilot scheme aimed at breaking down barriers to cycling for those living with Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s UK is the foundation’s first funding partner. It will help to provide training to cycling coaches and volunteers, as well as identify how cycling can help those with the disease and raising awareness of the disease in the wider community.
The partnership aims to provide cycling activities tailored to those with Parkinson’s. The partners point to research suggesting Parkinson’s symptoms can be alleviated by around 2.5 hours of physical activity per week, which can help to improve balance, strength and mobility. There are also benefits to sufferers’ confidence and mental wellbeing.

“Cycling helps me to manage some of my Parkinson’s symptoms and I’ve noticed an increase in my fitness levels, plus everyday tasks have become easier. After my diagnosis I struggled with anxiety but cycling and walking have contributed to a big improvement in my wellbeing,” says Graham, who was diagnosed with the disease in October 2017, aged 55.
British Cycling already has its Limitless disability and paracycling project, which has been found to help people with Parkinson’s. A pilot project at four UK locations will look to build on this, testing and refining the approach and helping sufferers to build cycling into their health journey.
According to Anna Castiaux, physical activity programme lead at Parkinson’s UK: “Being active can be one of the best ways to live well with Parkinson’s and I’m delighted to have agreed this new partnership with British Cycling.
“Whether you’re a keen cyclist or you’re just getting started, my hope is that this new offer will also allow more people with Parkinson’s to enjoy the physical, social and wellbeing benefits of cycling,” she continues.
To be part of the pilot project, clubs, organisations and people with Parkinson’s are encouraged to contact the British Cycling Foundation at foundation@britishcycling.org.uk.
