On Sunday, Tadej Pogačar won his fifth Tour de France title, a number that only four other cycling greats have achieved. At 27 years, 10 months and 5 days, he also became the youngest rider to win the race five times. But does that make him the greatest Tour de France rider of all time?
We recently published Timothy John’s ranking of the 10 greatest Tour riders, which placed Pogačar in second behind Eddy Merckx, who also won five titles. It also included the other riders to win a quintet – Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Induráin – and modern legends such as Jonas Vingegaard and Chris Froome.
