Wahoo brings onboard power to the Kickr Rollr

Wahoo’s answer to falling off the rollers, the Kickr Rollr, has had a significant update.

When it was launched in 2022, the Kickr Rollr was the only Wahoo trainer not to provide onboard power measurement, with Wahoo pointing to its Powrlink Zero pedal power meter (subsequently renamed Speedplay Power) if you wanted to know your output.

Using a separate bike-mounted power meter is still an option. But an upgrade to the Kickr Rollr trainer, available both to new purchasers and existing owners, now enables users to obtain consistent power readings without a separate power meter.

Wahoo says the power-measurement accuracy won’t match its direct-drive trainers (or a standalone power meter) because the rear wheel isn’t fixed in position, but is free to move laterally on the twin rear rollers.

However, it claims that, if you’re using the same bike and the same gearing, you’ll get data that’s sufficiently consistent to follow structured workouts and track your progress over time.

The Kickr Rollr’s onboard power data means users can pair the trainer with an indoor cycling app, such as Zwift, Rouvy, MyWhoosh or Wahoo’s own SYSTM for an immersive riding experience.

Can’t fall off

The Wahoo Kickr Rollr trainer has the advantage that there’s no need to remove a wheel or carry out any other setup before use. You just need to place your bike on the rollers, lock the front wheel in place and start riding.

This also makes it handy if multiple riders with different-sized bikes want to train on it.

Wahoo claims the Kickr Rollr is a good option for casual riders, beginners and fitness enthusiasts who don’t want a long setup process.

Plus, unlike traditional rollers, there’s not the learning curve for how to ride on rollers and you’re not going to star in a falling off the rollers YouTube video.

Despite the ease of use and high build quality, we rated the Wahoo Kickr Rollr 2.5 stars in our review. This was principally due to the lack of in-built power measurement, which this update addresses.

BikeRadar’s reviewer, Simon von Bromley, also noted the modest spec relative to similarly priced smart trainers at the launch price of £700 / $800 / €800, which Wahoo has also subsequently targeted, with a price decrease that places the Kickr Rollr at £550 / $700 / €600.
