Kryptonite New York Standard Lock

BikeRadar verdict

5 out of 5 stars

"The New York Standard is superb, tough and highly recommended"

Tue 10 Feb 2009, 4:00 pm UTCBy Simon Withers, Cycling Plus

If we were describing our ideal shackle lock, it would d be something like this: tough construction, protected lock mechanism, plenty of keys and a clever bracket. The New York has all this and a £1,200 anti-theft scheme.

Hammer attacks are nulled by the dual layer of steel protecting the cross bar, and the shackle is so solid we had two blokes hanging off a leverage bar and it still didn’t move.

We managed to cut through the shackle in the end, but that took two cuts, as the New York has a double locking mechanism. This lock has always been top of the tree, and that’s still the case.

Hi, Is this lock vulnerable to the infamous bic pen attack? Thanks

Looking at the photo, which includes the keys, the answer is no. The 'bic pen attack' relied upon the lock using tubular type keys. Kryptonite probably learned a major lesson with their old model and had to replace many locks. This Kryptonite lock appears to use Abloy-type disk detainers, which make picking a challenge. the Abus Granit X-Plus 54 D Lock also uses disks.

However, given enough time and knowledge, virtually any lock can be picked.

But in a public place, no thief is going to spend a long period picking a lock, when there are targets around that can be obtained quickly and easily with a hacksaw, bolt cutters and jack.

Possession of lock picking tools [or the other tools] in a public place without 'good reason' is treated as 'going equipped' to steal. Plod are likely to arrest anyone attempting to pick a lock, unless they can provide a really convincing explanation.

This lock is NOT vulnerable to the biro pen attack - it is however vulnerable to not getting carried as it is quite a weight, I own one. The ultimate 'theft solution' might be to buy a decent folding bike like the bike friday and keep it within line of sight. It's hard to know how to stop people stealing bikes, carry a flimsy lock and get your pride an joy stolen carry a heavy duty one like this and get used to carrying a seriously weighty piece of ironmongery around...
