BikeRadar verdict
"Scary fast and scary light – one for the extroverts, and we’re not just talking about the paintjob"
Shopping partners
The electric blue Cube is a stunner from first glance (it's also available in a stealth black colourway) and more than lives up to its attention-seeking garb.
Ride & handling: Not for beginners, but if you've got the ability, this bike will flatter your skills
The Cube is a classic cross-country hardtail, crammed with barely disguised trail-shredding fury. It has a spiky edge to it that’s nothing to do with the scorching paintjob and everything to do with the tightness of the frame and the kit hanging from it.
The light, responsive front end was either wayward or directable depending on the tester, which proves that variety is the spice of life and, even here, we like nothing better than a good disagreement on ride quality to enliven the long spin home.
It will flatter you if you have the riding ability to be able to pick lines and lead it to them; if you’re searching for a bike that will do most of the hard work for you, however, look elsewhere.
The Ltd Race is an involving, amusing ride and if you’re prepared to weather the inevitable learning curve you’ll endure, then it might be your perfect fit.

Frame: Race-ready geometry plus light weight = pedal-power rocket fuel
The double-butted 7005 aluminium frame has been built in Cube’s RFR (Ready For Race) mould. This combines a standard cross-country-steep 72° seat angle for efficient power transfer with a slightly slacker 70° head tube angle that ekes the most out of the 100mm fork with plenty of stability. Shave off grams thanks to the manipulated tubing and the effect is akin to pedal-power rocket fuel.
Equipment: Fantastic fork and decent wheels, but considering upgrading cockpit
We’re big fans of the updated RockShox Reba fork and the Cube suits the SL version down to the ground. They’re beautifully supple once bedded in and the Dual Air system gives virtually infinite options for tuning. Tracking is superb thanks to 32mm uppers and bulged lowers accommodating stiffer bushings, and the PopLoc remote lockout is great for smashing your way skywards.
Wheels are neat and tidy Sun Ringle XMBs shod with the stalwart pairing of Schwalbe’s Racing Ralph out back and a grippy, triple compound Nobby Nic up front.
Formula Oro K17s deal effectively with braking but we never managed to get a really comfortable cockpit setup dialled in, thanks to the pronounced kick on the brake levers that means they have to be wound almost to the bar to allow smaller hands purchase, and stumpy grips that left us with little room to manoeuvre on the bar.

I treated myself to one of these puppies a few months back....multi purpose use for me, day to day commute & XC. With the knoblues on for offroad, this thing flys...it is such good fun, and fast to ride. Its really helped me hone my offroad ability with extra zoom!. A former specialized rockhopper rider, I'm totally converted.......you take the components & add up the cost, this really is well spec'd and such a good price. I've had more compliments from all sorts of folk, the electric blue is the nutzz!

I purchased this beauty about 6 weeks ago and can say I'm very pleased with it!!!
After long search over the WEB I decided to go for CUBE bike.I know they are not so well known and popular over here but as I come from EU,Slovakia I knew this German bikes maker!!You can't go wrong with Audi or BMW cars-you can't go wrong with Cube bikes either!!!
One good point - these bikes aren't so overpriced!!!))So you get a lot of bike for your money!!!
For a test i took it to AfanCentre and have done Wall and Skyline trails.Comfortably and fast along full-susers!!!)
Yes,it looks a bit old-school with its oversized tubes but they are so light and stiff so you can ride as fast as you can over almost every terrain.Geometry and fork = spot on!!!Components = really good for the money!!
Colour = there is so many boring black or grey bikes out there..go for white-candy blue!!!It's greaaat,be brave and different and you will hear a lot of compliments and questions regarding your bike,it's real head turner along with performance hand in hand!!!
So after every weekend riding since I bought it - nothing wrong with bike,no issue at all!!
Just my ego - going for higher class stem, handlebar and seat post!))
So if you want ride faaast and feel comfy go for it!!!!

Owned my ltd race for about 5 months now and cant fault it. Tested many bikes prior to this one and none felt as complete as the cube. As people have said all ready you are getting a well specced bike for the money and it wont be long before cube is well established in the uk and the prices go up. The price has already gone from £880 to £1050 in the past few months.
Go and get one, you wont regret it.

After much market research settled on one of these as my first Mountain bike. Intended for trail/XC use it seemed to offer a strong mix of components and a frame which offered a good ride position. The LBS tailored the stem to fit better as the one supplied on my Large frame was 'like a donkeys you know what'.
After a few rides I can say that this is a great piece of kit. The ride is smooth and the Rock Shox Reba SL works well. Shifting is smooth and frankly the whole thing makes me want to ride it like I stole it! Guess that's a good thing.
For the money this is a great investment and I look forward to riding it daily!

I'm thinking of investing in the 2010 model. My other option is the Specialized Rockhopper SL Pro 2010 which at just over £950 seems a good investment. I've not seen a Ltd Race in the flesh yet but seen the comp & pro so like what I see. Is it worth the extra £70?

Bought the LTD Team 2009 for £800 in Black/Candy Green on ebay in April 2010.
After many months of research into HT MTBs sub £1100 I decided on the £1050 Cube LTD Race 2010 which gets 4.5 stars (The best in it’s class) from WhatMTB magazine. Then I found this on ebay for £800. What a bargain! The 2009 models carry a better spec than the 2010 models and were cheaper to buy at the time. This means if you can find one you can pick up great deals on the Cube LTD 2009 range. For example my new Cube LTD Team 2009 has Reba forks instead of Recons you get on the 2010 LTD Team and was £160 cheaper!
Superb spec and a fantastic, light frame makes this a great, fast ride. I tried and compared pretty much every £700-£1100 HT MTB out there including bikes from Boardman, Giant, GT, Focus, Merida, Scott, Marin, Cannondale, Specialized, Carrera and many more the only other ones which came close were the Trek 6500 and Boardman Pro...
...but the Cubes had the edge. I'm so chuffed with it I'd highly recommend a Cube LTD to anyone looking for a MTB in this price range, they're all great.
The Candy Green is very bright - a real head turner, contrasting well with the powder black. Everywhere I ride I hear comments about how awesome it looks. Up until the point I stood back and looked at it assembled I had wanted an all black one but at that moment I was totally happy.
The only slight concern I had was with the Formula K-18 brakes that came on the 09 model. There was a recall on these a while ago and MTB review forum is full of mixed comments about this, however, I have had no problems so far and apparently Formula USA have very high customer service standards.
Any Cube LTD is going to be a great bike but the 2009 range offer particularly good value for money. If you're considering a Cube I'd highly recommend just going for it and getting one, you wont be disappointed, I've NEVER read or heard a bad comment from a Cube LTD owner in all my many hours of research.
You can see a video of the Cube LTD Team 2009 on YouTube if you type in Google Cube ltd team 2009.

I expect my white and green race ltd to be ready this weekend. I borrowed a friends for a couple of weeks while he was away. I was really impressed with the all round performance and the colours are stunning. Darrensaddler, im bang on six feet and the 20" seems the perfect size for me. Enjoy.

Hi, I bought my 'stealth bike' 2009 Cube Ltd in 'boring anodised brown/black' about six months back, online from the UK. I'm a Brit living in Adelaide, South Australia and Cube are unknown here so I get the all the benefits of not only an awesome machine at an amazing price but exclusivity as well! Have upgraded mine with new wheel set Mavic 717s, XT Hubs and DT Swiss spokes, Thompson seat post, XT cranks/chain set and XTR cassette. (All the good quality OEM parts that were replaced have been swapped onto my daily commuter so nothing gets wasted).
Favourite thing about this bike is that I have not yet found it's limitations. The Formula Oro brakes may be cheap but boy do they work well, The frame is light and very stiff (just like a frame should be), the forks, Reba SL's with lockout are supple and work very well. There's really nothing not to like and there's still more potential to drop weight and make it even more fun although weight is not a problem at all with this spec. The engineering is typically German and hard to fault. basically this bike is way better than it should be for the money.
Have been competing and doing well in Enduro events as well as general riding with a group that includes a good smattering of high end USA machinery HT's and dualies. The little Cube has amazed everyone especially when I tell em what it cost me. In the end though its the rider not the bike so my advice is settle on something, get it so you will be happy with it and then forget about the bike and the hype and get out there and ride.

Recently bought a Cube Ltd 2011 in anodized black. I took it on its maiden ride on the black run at Llandegna Forest and it performed beautifully. I found it to be very fast and responsive. Very pleased with it.

Justatheory:
Same here, except I bought the white metal green one and thetford forest. Absolutely amazing machine, the fork is incredibly responsive and the 18" version has especially good cockpit and handling. One minor niggle is that the crankset isn't as high specced as that on say a CANYON and as much as I adore the formula RX brakes (ridiculously responsive) they are a bit squeaky. Overall, I would say BUY THIS BIKE NOW!!!!

After spending weeks and weeks trawling lbs,t'internet and forums i had actually decided on a different Mtb but on walking into leisurelakes and seeing the LTD Race 2011 in anodised black, sat on it and researched the spec there was no getting away from it.
My previous Mtb was a carerra kraken and though it was fun this Cube is a massive step up.
The Mtb is light, quick and racey and it suits the xc trails I do perfectly.
The spec I'm sooo pleased with Inc fox fork which performs beautifully, the oh so powerful formula fx brakes on 180 and 160 rotors and the 30 speed 3x10 shimano groupset.
Super light frame all anodised. Laser etched graphics...'no tired looking stickers'.
2 x schwalbe racing ralphs fitted as standard.
The looks... Stealthy black with red bling. Laser etched graphics. Ready for race geometry.
Had if for 8 weeks now and can't fault it, look forward to every blast on it and would highly recommend to anyone out there looking for a quality hardtail in the £1100 price region.
