The new Domane+ SLR is Trek’s lightest electric road bike and has increased gravel potential

Motor-assisted Domane is claimed to be 1.8kg lighter with wider 40mm tyre clearance

Trek claims to have shaved nearly 2kg from the new Domane SLR by using its top-level carbon frame material for the first time on an electric bike, alongside a lightweight motor system.

The Domane SLR is Trek’s first electric bike to use its highest-grade 800 series OCLV carbon. The frame is a claimed 700g lighter than the previous Trek Domane .

The brand says the compact TQ HPR50 ebike system, used on the Trek Fuel EXe electric mountain bike, also helps reduce weight.

The Domane SLR now has clearance for 40mm tyres (or 35mm with mudguards), up from 38mm. It also shares the rear IsoSpeed system and a number of other frame features with the non-assisted Domane.

Trek says the Domane SLR’s TQ HPR50 ebike system has a 360W/h battery to provide assistance up to 28mph in the US and 25km/h in Europe.

The battery has a claimed range of 100km in Eco mode and charges fully in 2.5 hours, according to Trek. The battery can’t be removed.

The 160W/h range extender is sold separately for $599 via local Trek dealers. It adds about 50km of battery life, according to Trek, and fits into the seat tube bottle cage.

Trek says the TQ system has a 300-watt motor and delivers 50Nm of torque, which is less powerful than the 55Nm offered through a Fazua Evation motor on the previous Domane .

The TQ motor’s three assist modes are controlled with shifters on the hoods, and the modes themselves can be customised in the Trek Central app, according to Trek.

The Harmonic Pin Ring system (HPR) is built around the bike’s bottom bracket ball bearings, according to TQ.

The brand claims this simpler system virtually obscures the motor and is quieter, more efficient and more reliable than other electric bikes. The majority of systems use an electric motor, belts, cog wheels and gears to transmit power.

Trek adds that the Domane SLR is one-and-a-half to two times quieter than its previous electric road bikes.

Domane in name and nature

Non-adjustable rear IsoSpeed and aero tube shapes come from Trek's road bikes. - Trek

Like the new, unassisted 2023 Trek Domane, the Domane SLR has non-adjustable rear IsoSpeed situated at the top tube / seatpost junction.

Trek says the Domane has the same fork, D-shaped seatpost and integrated cable routing as the Domane SLR.

The Domane SLR has hidden mudguard mounts and its integrated RCS Pro stem is Blendr-compatible.

This allows you to attach accessories such as bike computers and road bike lights to the stem while leaving your handlebar clear.

The top tube display is one of few giveaways that this is an electric bike. - Trek

However, the electric version doesn’t have internal down tube storage or top tube bag mounts, in order to make room for the TQ display.

Trek claims the Domane SLR’s Q-factor of 163mm gives a similar feel to a non-assisted Trek road bike.

The Domane SLR’s H2 endurance road bike geometry comprises a taller head tube and longer wheelbase for more comfort and stability than the racier H1.5 geometry on the Trek Madone SLR 9 eTap.
