Halfords has announced its 2020 Carrera men’s and women’s bike range, with a broad sweep of new models and updated specs.

Carrera bikes are popular with new cyclists or riders seeking value and the latest range sees major updates across the board. That includes wider tyres, disc brakes and dropped stays on Carrera’s road bikes, while Carrera’s mountain bikes have adopted a more up-to-date geometry.

There are many new models, with Halford saying this is the first full range review for seven years. Plus there are new colours, a larger logo on the down tube and new decals. Halfords says the new bikes will be in stock on its website from Monday 15 June.

In this article, we’ll run through what’s changed and each model in Carrera’s road bike, mountain bike, hybrid bike, electric bike, folding bike and kids’ bike ranges.

What’s changed?

Key changes announced cover new bikes, revised specs and updated geometries.

Carrera’s five road bike models (three men’s and two women’s) are now more comfort-oriented and come fitted with 28mm tyres and disc brakes. There’s space for tyres up to 32mm wide, if you want to go wider, and all models now have more modern styling with dropped seat stays.

Carrera’s 2020 road bikes now feature dropped seat stays. This is the £400 Carrera Vanquish Disc.
Halfords

That’s in line with recent trends, whereby the seat stays meet the seat tube lower down, reportedly improving comfort. The Carrera road range is priced between £300 and £600.

Carrera’s range of 13 mountain bikes is priced between £250 and £600. They now have more aggressive, modern geometry with longer wheelbase and slacker frame angles.

You’ll also find redesigned tube profiles and the bikes are, Halfords says, more robust too. Most also come with two chainring drivetrains, shorter stems and wider bars, and routing for a dropper post.

Carrera’s popular hybrid bikes have a revised geometry to provide a more upright riding position. This is the £300 Carrera Subway 1.
Halfords

The five urban hybrid bikes have a revised geometry with taller head tubes for a more relaxed riding position and two chainring drivetrains for simpler maintenance than a triple.

The leisure hybrid bike range includes a suspension fork and, like the urban hybrids, is designed for an upright riding position.

Carrera has also swapped to saddles with a memory foam layer for additional comfort and fitted its own brand tyres, made by Kenda, with added puncture protection via an aramid layer and ceramic particles in the rubber compound to up flat resistance.

That’s in response to a YouGov survey commissioned by Halfords. The results showed that 88 per cent of people thought saddle comfort was the most important factor in choosing a bike, while 41 per cent said that they weren’t confident that they could repair a puncture (if that’s you, read our guide to fixing a puncture).

Halfords has also aimed to keep the bikes’ weight and prices down, for riders who want a lightweight bike without a heavyweight price tag.

Where does Carrera fit in Halfords’ range?

Carrera bikes are sold exclusively by Halfords and sit between the budget Apollo range, and the premium Boardman and Voodoo bikes. The Carrera range’s emphasis is on value, with good specs and no bike priced above £600.

As with all Halfords’ bikes, you can buy online and also through the retailer’s extensive network of retail stores.
