Canyon has launched a flat-bar ebike geared to trekking, adding to its expanding range of electric bike options.

Higher spec models of the Pathlite:ON come with a rear rack and Supernova lights, letting you take on longer tours as well as the daily commute, shopping trips and day rides.

The launch of the Pathlite:ON, described as Canyon's "hardest working" electric bike, follows the release of the Roadlite:ON electric hybrid in 2019.

At the heart of the Pathlite:ON is a bottom bracket-mounted Bosch Performance Line CX motor, which Canyon says is the most powerful it’s ever specced on an ebike.

It supplies up to 75Nm of torque, but weighs only 2.9kg, for an overall bike weight that starts from around 21kg. The system uses a bar-mounted controller with a large LED display to show assistance level, battery charge and other ride stats.

Power is supplied by a locking, removable 500Wh battery in the Pathlite:ON’s down tube, which weighs 2.6kg.

More expensive bike models in the range supplement this with a second down tube-mounted 500Wh battery, which Canyon says gives a range of up to 150km (with a 100kg rider and bike weight, 45rpm cadence and 22kph average speed).

There’s a charge point built into the bike’s frame, so you don’t have to remove the battery to recharge.

Size-specific wheels

The Pathlite:ON comes in five sizes from XS to XL. In line with many of Canyon’s bikes, smaller frame sizes have smaller wheels: 27.5in on the XS and S frames and 29in on the M, L and XL.

Canyon says this allows it to offer a similar geometry on different bike sizes, and a consistent ride feel. Regardless of the model, you’ll get 57mm-wide Schwalbe G-One Allround tyres, designed to offer grip and a comfortable ride on uneven surfaces.

The Pathlite:ON features a Suntour XCR suspension fork with 100mm of travel and lock-out. That’s coupled to an alloy frameset designed for an upright riding position.

The Supernova light system fitted to higher spec models has a dipping front light. It’s controlled by a cabled switch held to the bike by a magnet, allowing you to position it wherever is most comfortable for you.

Other available features, depending on the model and price, include mudguards, a kickstand and a rear rack that's rated to carry up to 25kg and is compatible with Ortlieb’s panniers. There’s also a link point for a Croozer trailer for extra load lugging.

Range and pricing

The range starts with the £2,349 Pathlite:ON 5.0 model, with a Shimano Deore XT M8000 11-speed rear mech, Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes and Suntour XCR34 fork. It doesn’t feature mudguards, kickstand, a rack or lights though.

The Pathlite:ON 6.0, priced at £2,599, adds an upgraded Suntour XCR34 Air fork, Shimano SLX M7100 brakes and 12-speed Deore M8100 shifting, while the £2,799 Pathlite:ON 7.0 drops back to 11-speed, but adds the Supernova dynamo light set, mudguards, a kickstand and rack.

Step up to the £4,099 Pathlite:ON 8.0 and you get a second 500Wh battery as standard, locked to the top of the down tube and using the same key as the internal battery. Shifting is 11-speed Shimano Deore XT M8000 and once again there’s the upgraded Suntour XCR34 Air suspension fork.

Finally, the range-topping Pathlite:ON 9.0, priced at £4,649, adds 12-speed Shimano Deore XT M8100 gearing and premium Ergon handlebar grips to the packing. With its extra battery and other add-ons, this spec’s quoted weight is 27.5kg.

Canyon backs up the Pathlite:ON e-bike with a six-year guarantee. The Pathlite:ON is available to buy now via the Canyon website.
