Adjustable stems are a useful way of tweaking your handlebar height and reach, particularly for touring where you spend long hours in the saddle.
The Comp is one of the most reliable models we’ve come across. It fits a 1 1/8in threadless steerer and is available in a range of lengths – 80, 100 and 120mm – in both standard and oversize clamp diameters. The angle of adjustment is a full 90° (from 45° higher than horizontal to 45° lower).
Made in forged 6061 T-6 aluminium, there’s a reassuring chunkiness to the stem, and no discernible flex or squeaking from the bolt during riding.
In theory there’s nothing to stop you making changes while on tour; in practice it’s not that easy, as you’ll need to completely remove the stem to adjust the angle, and tilt the handlebar, brakes and shifters accordingly too.
At 225g for the 80mm model, weight is surprisingly low. On the downside, there are no incremental markings, which means getting a specific angle takes a bit of guesswork.
