Following in the footsteps of Adidas’ well-regarded Terrex Trail Cross SL comes this new high top MTB shoe.
The sole is identical to the SL low tops and uses the Stealth rubber compound found on Five Tens (also owned by Adidas). A triangular tread pattern runs across much of the sole with shallower lugs in the centre. There are also grooved sections at the toe and heel that help walking traction.
Though very different to the soles on Five Tens, the chunkier tread doesn’t noticeably diminish the famous ‘locked in’ properties of Stealth soles — your feet still feel totally glued to the pedals.
The pay off for great grip on and off the bike though is less feel. Muted pedal feedback makes Adidas’ shoes seem fairly clog-like when compared to the Five Tens also on test.
Overall, fit is excellent with Ortholite midsoles giving great arch support. The Velcro ankle strap provides comfort and stability, while D30 foam pads to the sides of the ankle strap, plus the rubberised toe boot, do a solid job of fending off rock strikes.
The main body of the synthetic uppers is made from a ripstop fabric which keeps splashes at bay while remaining fairly breathable — though testing over winter means I'm yet to try them in warm conditions.
