Cyclists can now wave goodbye to cold hands, according to Halfords, thanks to the new Carrera Subway A/W (‘All Weather’) hybrid bike, which features heated handlebar grips.

The grips — described as a world exclusive — are powered by a rechargeable and removable insert, which can apparently reach temperatures of up to 40 degrees celsius. Battery life is a claimed two hours.

Halfords, the retailer behind the Carrera brand, says the grips have been specced off the back of a recent poll that showed ‘68% of cyclists are put off cycling during winter’ (though it didn’t specify whether those people were specifically put off by the fear of cold hands).

As the exclusive UK retailer of the bike, Halfords is also keen to promote its other winter-friendly components, which include semi-integrated lights, mudguards, puncture resistant tyres, Clarks hydraulic disc brakes and reflective frame details.

Winter-specific features aside, the bike is built around an aluminium frame with a steel fork and a nine-speed Shimano Altus drivetrain with a double chainset.

Any cyclist who's ridden through winter knows that cold hands are no fun, but one query we do have is, ‘How well do the heated grips work if you’re wearing gloves?’.

The Carrera Subway A/W is available now from Halfords and costs £400.
