Superstar Components launched three new pedals last month, including the El Plastique pedal we have here. The El Plastique is a plastic-bodied pedal that's loosely based on the company’s popular aluminium-bodied Nano model.

Plastic?! Yep, but don’t panic. Plastic pedals are fairly common and well proven in the punishing world of BMX riding. Of course, these aren’t the only plastics around; Nukeproof has successfully sold a plastic mountain bike pedal for years – but not for as little as £25!

The El Pastique's Nylon-reinforced composite bodies help make them cheaper than Superstar's alloy pedals, and also lighter than most of them. Our sample pair tipped the BikeRadar scales at just 343g.

At 98x95mm, the platform is marginally narrower than the Nano’s, but it has the same slim 17mm profile. There are eight pins per side to provide grip, and six of those are replaceable and adjustable steel items. The other two are fixed plastic inner parts.

The El Plastiques spin on sealed bearing and bushing internals, which are further sealed with rubber lips placed between the axle end and pedal body. There's no fancy axle upgrades available here – each El Plastique will arrive with a steel axle.

They come in four colour options – black, white, red or green.

So, that’s a lightweight pedal based on a proven design, for just £25. It certainly sounds sweet, but as usual we’ll try our best to break them before posting our findings in a full review!
