Just launched on Kickstarter, the FAST light is a Bluetooth enabled LED tail light that can change colours, detect crashes and act as an anti-theft device. Aiming to raise US$20,000, the smart light should begin shipping in November if successfully funded.
The 30-lumen smart tail light’s flashing patterns, and the colours emitted through its RGB LED’s are customisable through a smartphone app — available on Android and IOS. While the option to change the flashing pattern is sure to get attention, in some countries the law dictates a tail light must be red, so this feature may cause more trouble than it solves.
Like the ICEdot and Skylock, if the FAST light’s internal motion sensors and accelerometers detect and impact, the light will send a notification to a pre-nominated emergency contact; though there’s no mention of whether a notification or countdown is triggered on the rider’s phone to prevent false alarms.
The FAST light app controls all the lights functions
The FAST light app also features an anti-theft mode, similar to the Fly12. If the bike is ‘locked’ through the app and then detects movement, an alert is sent to the Bluetooth connected device (connected device must be within range).
Utilising a photosensor the light’s ISO mode evaluates ambient light, and automatically turns on as it gets dark.
Claimed to be waterproof and dustproof, the FAST light comes in three colours, and has a claimed battery life of; 10-hours on ‘solid mode,’ 60-hours on ‘flashing mode’ and 60-days in ‘standby mode. It runs off a USB rechargable Lithium Polymer battery.
Now every component on your bike can have a Bluetooth connection
Carl Qin from FAST light told BikeRadar, “We have a working sample and are in the tooling stage. The apps are in beta and we plan for both iOS and Android at launch time.”
The Chinese startup says the light can be used as bedside night light/alarm clock as well as a light for photography, although we’re not sure many will utilise these off bike features.
Already a quarter of the way there, if successfully funded, the FAST light will retail for US$39. For more info or to back the project, visit the FAST light’s Kickstarter page.
