Halfords High Mount review

Our initial impressions were good – it came out of its box in a fairly compact form and the straps weren’t flapping all over the place. But once opened up to be offered to the car, things started to go wrong.

Good looks not backed up in practice

Our initial impressions were good - it came out of its box in a fairly compact form and the straps weren't flapping all over the place. But once opened up to be offered to the car, things started to go wrong.

The quick releases for the toothed joints between rack sections loosen just fine, but then you have to squeeze the rack together a little to get them to adjust. Then the top straps have daft little dumbbell parts you put on the end of them, but only after you've threaded the straps through your car. Then there's more fiddling to try to get the thing to sit right and reduce the amount of load that runs almost vertically down to the bottom mount on the bumper.

It took three blokes 20 minutes to get only a half-happy fitting. Then we discovered the sections where your bike fits and is strapped to the rack can simply slide off the end of the arms. The red straps are all that's going to stop your bikes falling off the back under strong acceleration or due to wind resistance at speed.

Bikes: 3. Weight limit: N/A.
