Space-expanding roof system with a solid bike mount. Ideal for small cars

Swedish company Thule produce so many variations of bike rack that they’re sure to cater for your needs. Here’s a combination that isn’t often seen.

The Proride 591 bike carrier is a popular choice when looking into bike racks for the roof of your car. It features a gulley for your wheels to sit in, secured by clip straps and a moveable arm that attaches to your bike’s down tube, and clamps on solidly by rotating the dial at the base of the arm, which can be locked for security.

It really couldn’t be simpler and makes a joy of fixing the bike to the car. When it’s cold and wet, the speed of this system is worth its weight in gold.

The less common addition we tried is the Xperience 828 roof basket. The lightweight tubular steel basket mounts to normal roof bars and comes with a funky windbreak.

For wet and dirty riding, this is a great alternative to chucking all your sloppy gear inside the car, and is no more hassle than just having roof bars.
