Our review
The Superlight PL exceeds expectations with an impressive warmth-to-weight ratio and great performance, along with a fit that’s among the best we’ve tried

Pros:

Easily packable; lightweight; fit; water-resistance; warmth-to-weight ratio

Cons:

Expensive

Scott’s Insuloft Superlight PL Jacket is intended to offer seriously impressive performance thanks to light insulation, a DWR coating and convenient packability.

It's Scott’s lightest insulated jacket, using 60g bluesign-approved PrimaLoft GOLD material with Aerogel in a baffled construction.

The water resistance and warmth-to-weight ratio are impressive, and it's difficult to find fault with this jacket, although the price is accordingly high.

The jacket's insulating fibres have a ‘highly porous, lightweight structure originally developed by NASA scientists’ and it's touted as being a ‘year-round active insulation to keep you warm during and after intense activities in cold weather’.

There are two zippered hand pockets, elastane binding at the cuffs and an adjustable dropped hem. It all packs away into an interior chest pocket.

DRYOZone PF-free DWR and DURObreeze technologies provide protection from rain and wind chill.

Scott Insuloft Superlight PL Jacket performance

Straight off the bat, this jacket impresses with how light and comfortable it is to wear.

The fit is exceptional and it looks good both on and off the bike.

Given just how packable it is, the Scott is an obvious choice to carry as an extra layer for unpredictable weather and unforeseen mechanicals.

The DRYOzone’s DWR finish has stood up to harsh, cold conditions with strong cross-winds and thick drizzle, keeping me dry throughout.

Each time, I’ve been amazed by the water-shedding capability, which hasn’t shown any signs of breaking down even after several washes.

In a temperature range of 0 to 5°C, working in zones two to four, this jacket has displayed ample breathability, helping me avoid getting chilled from sweat build-up.

It has a superb close yet unrestrictive, ‘athletic’ fit that I teamed with a long-sleeved Merino baselayer.

This proved to be a winning combination against freezing temperatures and wind chill, thanks to the wind-resistant outer fabric.

Scott has clearly pulled out all the stops in order to offer a super-light, functionally sound mountain bike jacket but, understandably, it doesn’t come cheap.

Contributing to the light weight are simply finished elasticated cuffs.

However, the chunky drawcord at the hem isn’t the most elegant solution, and for the price I’d expect a more refined design.

Scott Insuloft Superlight PL Jacket bottom line

Ian Linton / Our Media

The Superlight PL is a jacket that performs well on and off the bike, offering versatility to be worn as part of a layering system or outer layer thanks to the impressive waterproofing properties.

The high price might put some off, but in my experience the jacket's quality and performance matches its price. I’d wager it will be a firm favourite in your mountain biking wardrobe.
