Top-flight trail shorts

BikeRadar score3/5

These are Bontrager’s top-flight trail shorts and they’re built tough. Combining canvas, rip-stop and low-friction nylon, the Rhythm Comps are by no means a lightweight cross-country short and weigh in accordingly.

That said, once you’ve got them on the fit is good thanks to the stretchy rear panel and there are plenty of pockets – including one designed specifically for rubbish, apparently.

There’s also a tough web belt to keep your belongings safe and secure while you’re pegging it to your heart’s content. The vents can be opened along the front via handy zips.

The shorts come with Bonty’s top-line RXL removable chamois, which may not be the most padded in the world but is comfortable on long rides and is nice and breathable thanks to its micro-mesh construction.

Be warned, however, make sure you try before you buy. Our size large pair came up… well, quite ‘snug’ around the groin and tended to ride up a bit as a result. Not cool and not comfortable.
