Not the most technical or feature- packed shorts, but for low-sweat riding they’re a stylish option

Everyone needs a bit of plaid in their cycling wardrobe. Cut long, the Stair Steps reach down to just below your knees and they’re actually a lot lighter than they look.

Put anything heavy in the zipped cargo side pocket and it tends to slap as you pedal, but you get another pocket on the bum and a zip stash inside.

With seven sizes (from 28-40in) to choose from and Velcro waist-adjustment tabs you should be able to get the perfect fit, and the crotch is close fitting enough not to get snagged easily when you hang off the back of your saddle.

The polyester outer fabric is reasonably airy but you don’t get any vents or leg adjusters for controlling the climate, and the Stair Steps hang on to more moisture than most mountain bike baggies.

That’s largely down to the Cytech seat pad which, although comfortably cushioned, is broad and bulky. The integrated mesh liner is fast wicking though, and the rubber grippers hold the legs in place well.
