Our review
A tough and free-feeling pair of shorts that combine performance with great value

Pros:

Great fit; slippy fabrics help with moving around on the saddle; tough build

Cons:

Can be warm in the summer

The Endura Hummvee Shorts were originally designed for the daily punishment meted out by city couriers, and the model has been part of the Endura lineup for many years.

The rugged, wear-resistant build– thanks to a hefty nylon fabric and triple stitching in places – quickly developed into a strong favourite with trail riders too.

A practical allocation of well-proportioned pockets (two hip, two rear, and two thigh cargo pockets) with zip closures, and just-below-knee length (15in inseam, size medium) has only cemented their wide appeal.

With their heavy build, the Hummvee Shorts could be pretty warm for summer use, so a 200mm mesh vent is zipped into each thigh for ventilation.

This pair in a size medium weighed 386g without the Endura Series 200 liner, which is included in the price.

Endura Hummvee Shorts performance

Pulling the Hummvee shorts on for the first time was an exercise in finding pockets pretty much wherever I put my hands; this is a very ergonomically designed pair of mountain bike shorts.

Deep back pockets swallow up pretty much anything up to the size of a folded OS map – good news if you still tote paper maps – and the hip pockets are a perfectly usable size with zip closure to keep valuables secure.

Adjusting the waist was easy. Endura has opted for a large, easily repaired button for fastening and a webbing belt to draw in any excess waistband.

This is a far better option than the quick-to-wear-out Velcro tab adjustment.

On the bike we loved the slip and slide the nylon fabric allowed on the saddle, meaning pedalling felt free and any movement around the bike was done with ease. These had noticeably less fabric friction here than with other shorts.

The length was perfect, sitting just below the knee. The pads fitted fine and a stretch panel at the bottom of the back meant they settled nicely into the pedalling position without being dragged down.

Endura's Series 200 liner is comfortable, although it is easily removed if you prefer bib shorts underneath your mountain bike shorts, as many riders do.

Endura Hummvee Shorts bottom line

The tough material can feel hot, but there's a large, zipped vent to help keep you cool. - Andy McCandlish / Our Media

I loved the sheer practicality of the Endura Hummvee Shorts, from rugged fabrics that easily shrugged off any tree scuffs, branch catches or trail spills, to the perfect allocation of handy pockets and vents.

The keen price that includes an excellent liner only drives home their perfect score.
