Middleburn is a British company that produces a wide range of crankset combinations with a high degree of interchangeability. Detachable spiders themselves are nothing new - they've been used on carbon cranks for years - but Middleburn is the only firm to offer spiders separately to the public. This means an upgrade, for instance from a 130mm road to 110mm compact double, can be done economically by simply undoing the lockring on the right hand crank and then changing the spider.

The Uno set-up tested does away with the spider altogether - the chainring fits directly to the crank but the amount of flex this introduces means that the size of the chainring is limited to either 32 or 34 teeth, though this is perfect for offroad singlespeeders wishing to shave weight.

All Middleburn cranks have a tough and durable clear anodized finish so they stay looking good for longer than most of their competitors and are also available in black.

Great value and it's British!
