An International Cycling Union (UCI) approved road race is expected to be held on London's planned course for the 2012 Olympic Games this summer.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the one-day event has been pencilled in for 14 August. Racers will follow the full Olympic route but will only do three circuits around Box Hill in Surrey, instead of the nine planned for the men's race at the Games.

The race was reportedly listed in the UCI's 2010-11 road calendar, but has now been removed. If the rumour is true, many of the world's top riders are likely to attend, even though the race will take place less than a week before the start of the Vuelta a España on 20 August.
