BMX legend Dave Mirra dies aged 41

BMX loses one of its brightest-ever stars

The bike community has once again been left deeply saddened this week as the news came in of the loss of BMX legend Dave Mirra. Greenville Police have confirmed that Mirra, 41, has died in an apparent suicide in North Carolina.

American rider Mirra turned professional in 1992 and began a lengthy and successful career that continually pushed the boundaries of freestyle BMX. Mirra took a staggering 24 medals in the X Games between 1995 and 2009, 14 of which were gold.

Mirra also gained much attention through a highly successful video game franchise. In more recent years, Mirra also turned his attention to triathlon and even competed in Global RallyCross racing.

Mirra undoubtedly inspired an entire generation of riders, many of which whom are present here in the BikeRadar towers. Rest in peace, Dave.

The news follows the tragic death of freerider Kelly McGarry on Monday.
