Joe Parkin (L) and Bob Roll, former pro road and mountain bike racers turned authors.

The SoCal Interscholastic Cycling League is having its CycleFest 2009 fundraising dinner on the Queen Mary Hotel in Long Beach, California on November 21, with former racer and current television commentator Bob Roll as special guest and host.

Roll, a California native, is a former professional cyclist, racing with the 7-Eleven Cycling Team in the mid 1980s. Later in his career Roll switched to mountain bike racing for Greg LeMond’s Z team before racing for Softride/Otis Guy, competing on the professional circuit for eight years, retiring in 1998. Roll Raced in eight World Championships in both road racing and mountain biking.

Known as “Bobke” — Southern Dutch for “Bobby” — the 49-year-old Roll has written popular books, and is probably better known as a Versus commentator with Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen. A story teller, Roll adds his own perspective to the sport.

The November 21 CycleFest dinner will also feature several internationally known SoCal-based cyclists, including multi-time world champion Brian Lopes, ultra-endurance champion Pua Sawicki, and Olympian Sid Taberlay.

The event will also feature a silent auction and a catered dinner. All proceeds from the tickets sales and the silent auction will go toward supporting the SoCal Interscholastic Cycling League. The fundraising goal is US$30,000.

Tickets are on sale and cost US$150. Patron tickets, which include preferred seating and special gifts, are US$195.
