The British Human Power Club are set to provide one of the highlights of BikeRadar Live 2010 when they race around the Brands Hatch motor circuit on a variety of weird and wacky two-wheelers.
With vehicles ranging from simple recumbents to hand-crafted streamlined speed machines, they’ll take over the track on Saturday 10 July from 7.30-9pm.
Adrian Setter, the club’s competition secretary, said: "It's a rare treat to race on such an impressive and historic circuit as Brands Hatch, and I hope other visitors will be fascinated to see the variety of human powered vehicles that will be on show.
“The machines racing will range from fast road-going machines, through no-compromise unfaired circuit racers, right up to the ultimate, hand-crafted, fully faired streamliners.”
According to Setter, overall honours are likely to be taken by one of the "Beano" carbon-Kevlar streamliners, which are expected to lap at average speeds of over 30mph. There’s the potential of a close race between veteran, and two-time world HPV champion, Steve "Slasher" Slade and the youthful Lee Wakefield.
The hot favourite in the unfaired class is Mike Burrows – designer of the bike Chris Boardman road to Olympic glory in Barcelona, and originator of the 'compact road' concept – who, according to Setter, “at the age of 67 continues to defy the effects of advancing years by building faster and yet faster bikes”.
