Cycling star Mark Cavendish has made the shortlist for this year's prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
His Team GB team-mates Bradley Wiggins and Victoria Pendleton narrowly missed out on a place in the top 10, leaving Cav as the only cyclist with a chance of repeating Sir Chris Hoy's win in the 2008 competition.
But the 24-year-old Manxman, who won a historic (for a Briton) six stages in this year's Tour de France, faces some tough competition from the likes of Formula One champion Jenson Button, world champion diver Tom Daley and Manchester United football star Ryan Giggs.
Also in the top 10 are three more world champions – heptathlete Jessica Ennis, triple jumper Phillips Idowu and gymnast Beth Tweddle – along with heavyweight boxer David Haye, England cricket captain Andrew Strauss and tennis ace Andy Murray.
Mountain bikers will be disappointed, albeit unsurprised, to hear that downhill racing legend and 2009 world champion Steve Peat failed to make the shortlist. The winner of the competition will be decided by a public vote on Sunday 13 December.
