CTC, the UK’s national cyclists’ organization has named Cheshire West and Chester Council as the best pothole-fixing council following a nationwide competition.
The council fought off challenges from the 217 highway authorities across Britain to claim the award for highest percentage of potholes fixed during the contest – 47 out of 47. The initiative was launched during the winter/spring “pothole season,” with CTC teaming up with construction company Aggregate Industries to measure councils' road maintenance performance.
The public were invited to pinpoint potholes on the map at their Fill That Hole website. They were then asked to rate their authority on the overall condition of the roads. While Cheshire West and Chester came out on top, Newham, West Lothian, Brent, Redbridge and Luton also scored 100 percent.
Roger Geffen, Campaigns and Policy Director at CTC, added: “The public is very keen to see improved road maintenance standards, and this is particularly true for cyclists, as good surfaces are hugely important for their safety. With Fill That Hole making it easy for road users to report road defects, people are discovering that many councils are good at fixing them quickly once they know about them.”
During the competition, 11,200 potholes were reported to the Fill The Hole site, many of them via their iPhone app. Although the competition has now ended, the desire to fill potholes hasn’t and you can continue to report them by visiting the CTC website.
