The final round of the 2010 Chain Reaction Cycles MTB Marathon Series powered by Mercedes-Benz Vito Sport took place over the weekend when nearly 1,300 riders rode through wet and muddy conditions in Ruthin, North Wales.

A special night riding stage was hosted by Exposure Lights on Friday in which 100 riders took on a challenging 42km course.

After a gentle climb up to The Clwyd Gate Motel they headed to Moel Famau, where the route alternated between forest track and singletrack, before descending Frith Mountain, crossing Offa’s Dyke, heading down to Gellifor and following tarmac and bridleways back to Ruthin.

The first rider over the line finished the course in 1hr 56min while the last one home finished in 4hr 24min.

The marathon proper got into full swing on Saturday morning, and there were four courses on offer.

The fastest rider on the 30km mini marathon finished in 1hr 17min while the last full-distance rider made his way over the finish line at Ruthin Rugby Club after 8hr 23min.

Driving rain, wind and the inevitable mudfest didn’t impact on the fun people had during the day. “Going by the endless row of smiling faces the last event of the series was another great success,” said marathon organiser Mike Wilkens.
