Hunt Bike Wheels has released two new dynamo wheelsets, one of which continues its longstanding collaboration with Mason cycles with the mountain bike focussed Search 29 Dynamo Disc.

Spin me round

The heart of any dynamo wheelset is the generator itself.

Hunt hasn’t skimped here, using the renowned SON 28 hub to provide power. This is the de facto standard for dynamo hubs and this class-leading model is the one against which others are measured.

With 29”/700c rims, this dynamo operates at 65% efficiency when the wheel spins at 15km/h.

With no load applied to the dynamo (i.e. the power turned off) the dynamo adds an essentially negligible 0.5 watts of resistance over a standard non-dynamo hub.

That means you have power on tap into when you need it, be it for lights or charging accessories, with no significant loss when that power isn’t needed anymore.

The rest of the wheel builds use the usual assortment of high-quality parts that Hunt has become known for.

The Search 29 Dynamo Disc is the fourth collaboration between Mason Cycles and Hunt Bike wheel. As such, the wheelset is in part intended for and is perfectly suited to Mason’s new InSearchOf multi-purpose bruiser.Of course, you’re not limited to just this bike, which makes this wheelset perfect for the more adventurous off-road exploring you might do — it is essentially a mountain bike dynamo wheelset.

Hunt’s Trail Wide MTB rim is made from a 6069 T6 shot-peened alloy which is claimed to be 69% stronger than the usual 6061 T6. The rims have a 30mm internal width and will work with tyres from 2.25-2.8 inches wide.

The hubs use boost spacing, with the dynamo measuring 15x110 and the rear hub 148x12. The rear hub has a quick 5-degree engagement angle and uses double-sealed bearings for extra durability.

Each wheel is built up with 32 triple butted Pillar PSR spokes and we are pleased to see brass nipples for extra corrosion resistance.

The wheelset weighs in at a claimed 2,165g and will cost £549.

This wheelset is intended for long distance road or gravel rides — perfect for ultra-distance riders but also completely suited for your daily commute. The rims are constructed from unidirectional T24/30 carbon fibre, with a 30mm depth and 21mm internal width. That makes them suited for anything from 23-50c tyres with the added benefit of an aerodynamic profile

The thru axle hubs can be adapted to quick release if required and have a 5-degree engagement angle.

Wheels are built up with 28 Pillar aero butted spokes front and rear with alloy nipples to save a little extra weight.

The wheels weigh in at an impressive 1618g — that’s just 240g heavier than Hunt’s lightest disc wheelset — and will cost £1,059 for the pair.
