GoPro has today officially released its highly anticipated HERO4 action camera.

The HERO4 will be available from 5 October and is available in two versions – the HERO4 Black and HERO4 Silver, which are set to debut 4k (ultra-high definition) recording at 30 fps and a built-in LCD touch display, respectively.

HERO4 Black

The £369.99 / €479.99 / US$500 / AU$639 HERO4 Black is capable of recording at a 4k resolution with a frame rate of 30fps – that's four times the resolution of 1,080p, and a big jump up from the last GoPro's choppy 15fps capability at this resolution. Similarly, the new Black can record 12-megapixel burst photos at 30 frames per second.

The new image sensor used in the Black is said to be twice as powerful as that of the HERO3 , and the audio is supposed to be able to pick up twice the dynamic range of the previous device.

A new, integrated ADC (analog-to-digital converter) means the new HERO4 Black is compatible with a wider variety of professional low-sensitivity external mics, once paired with a 3.5mm Mic Adapter (sold separately).

Thanks to a new automatic low light mode, the HERO4 will intelligently adjust frame rates based on lighting conditions for optimal low-light performance, enabling you to move between bright and dark environments without having to adjust your camera settings. Night Photo and Night Lapse modes offer customisable exposure settings of up to 30 seconds, for images of the night sky and more.

The are also new settings for manual control of colour, ISO limit and exposure settings for photos and video. In its supplied case, the device is waterproof to 40m.

It should be easier to use than the previous GoPro, thanks to a new dedicated button that allows quick access to the camera settings. Similarly, a new QuikCapture mode allows the device to power on and start recording automatically with the press of a single button. Press once to record video, press and hold for two seconds to capture Time Lapse photos. Neat.

The HERO4 Black also has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as standard.

HERO 4 Silver

The £289.99 / €379.99/ US$400 / AU$509 HERO4 Silver doesn't offer 30fps 4k recording, but does have an in-built LCD touch display. The display is a first of its kind for GoPro and can be used to frame shots and review content as well as functioning as a swipe display to help you navigate the camera menus and settings more easily.

The HERO4 Silver also offers the same low light and burst modes as its more expensive brother, as well as QuikCapture functionality, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, and extended microphone compatibility.
