Just as an award-winning cycle designer claims the industry is focusing too much on high-end models, we hear from UK retailers Argos that sales of budget folding bikes are soaring.

In fact, the chain say there’s been a 500 percent increase in demand since this time last year, and they reckon this trend will continue thanks to rising fuel costs and forecasts of better weather to come.

Their best selling model is the £99.99 Challenge Folding City 6 Gear Bike – boasting six-speed Shimano gearing, V-brakes and a rear luggage rack.

Jamie Wilby, buyer of bicycles at Argos, said: “As people struggle to afford to fill up their vehicles, these folding bikes have emerged as the ideal car alternative.

“They’re particularly convenient for commuters who can carry them onto trains and buses and store them easily at their destination, and cycling offers financial and health benefits as well.”

So what do you think? Will bikes like this trigger a cycle commuting boom?
