We gave you a sneak peek at Giro's featherweight Prolight helmet during this year's Tour de France, and now we've got a couple in the office, ready for testing.

Weighing in at 173g for a medium model – 2g lighter than the claimed 175g – the Prolight is one of a new breed of super-lightweight lids, vying against the likes of Limar's Pro104 Ultralight.

Instead of the usual plastic cradle, it comes with Giro's new RocLoc SL fit system – a wide elastic strap that grips the back of your head and is attached to one of three mounting points at the front of the helmet via sections of plastic webbing.

It's surprisingly comfortable on, and 25 vents mean you shouldn't overheat. We'll put up a full review as soon as we've put in some miles wearing it.

Giro's UK distributors Madison say the Prolight will be in stock in February 2010, priced at £149.99.
