The London Cycle Challenge, where teams of cyclists compete in a four week long contest to rack up as many many miles as they can, has opened for registration.
It is free to enter and is open to anyone who lives, works or studies in London. The challenge, run by Transport for London (TfL), will take place between 18 June and 15 July and is expected to attract thousands of entrants. Last year more than 10,000 Londoners cycled more than 17,000,000 miles and the aim is the same again this year - ride as many miles as you can, anywhere you want.
All cycle journeys count and don’t have to take place within the capital. The contest runs on a system of honesty; only the miles actually cycled should ever be logged. Schools can also set up teams and go head-to-head with other London schools.
There are four awards up for grabs for teams of 2-10 members (£75 first prize), 11-50 (£150), 51-100 (£350) and 101 and over (£750). To register, visit www.tfl.gov.uk/cyclechallenge, register your team and start logging your miles. Progress can be checked on a real-time leaderboard.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “Bragging rights are at stake for teams of cyclists all over the capital but the Cycle Challenge is also a great way for new cyclists to join forces and give it a go. Summer is the perfect time of year for people to step up the amount of time they spend on two wheels and the Cycle Challenge is an ideal motivation to do so.”
